Thomas Merton raised this question about the meaning of Advent, especially when hope comes in conflict with darkness. He writes that: “Advent is the sacrament of the presence of God in the world.” This Advent weekend will be an invitation to receive the sacrament of hope so that we might walk from the darkness into the light.
