Icon Painting: Writing an Icon of St. Mary Magdalen

A special interest in sacred icons has grown over the past few years as those of the Roman Catholic tradition have discovered the deep spiritual power of these quiet and mysterious images from Eastern Christianity.  During this six-day retreat, participants will follow step-by-step instructions to complete an icon.  Participants will create an icon of St. Mary Magdalen from start to finish.

This class incorporates an introduction to the history, theology and symbolism of icons as well as techniques in gold leafing and painting on a board which has been prepared with a white gesso.

Although the traditional medium used is egg tempera, the introductory classes employ acrylic paints.  No prior experience is required and all skill levels are welcome. The only requirement is a willingness to follow instructions and the desire to explore something new.  This retreat will begin on Sunday, September 17 at noon and end at noon on Friday, September 22.
