In the Scriptures, the figure of Sophia (Wisdom) is a female personification of God’s Presence inviting us into relationship and spiritual growth. In our own lives, the stories of women, both in Scripture as well as in our personal histories, have been for us sources of wisdom and invitations to grow as women and as members of God’s family. This day of reflection will give us the opportunity to spend time with our foremothers in the faith, the holy women of Sacred Scripture as well as one woman in our family history who has been instrumental in our own faith growth. This sacred time will be an invitation to celebrate the wisdom legacies of the women who went before us and on whose shoulders we stand on today.  Reflecting on their lives will give us the opportunity to see the world through their eyes and get in touch with the Wisdom Woman who lives within each one of us. Please bring a journal and photographs of a wisdom woman in your life: grandmother, mother, aunt, teacher…so we will celebrate and honor her as well.

Mercedes Rojo, OSF, is a Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia. She currently works as a psychotherapist at a mental health clinic in Sharon Hill, PA. She also ministers at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in Aston, PA where she offers programs and spiritual direction. Sr. Mercedes received her BA in humanities from LaSalle University and holds master degrees in education and Pastoral Care and Counseling from St. Joseph University and Neumann University. She also holds a Spiritual Direction Certificate form Neumann University. Sister Mercedes has extensive experience as an educator, retreat facilitator and spiritual director. She worked in various private and parochial schools for eighteen years and was the administrator and program coordinator of St. Raphaela Center in Haverford, PA, where she also offered retreats and spiritual direction. Sr. Mercedes was the Disciples in Mission Program Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, writing curriculum and training manuals as well as offering training and mentoring to the program’s faith sharing group leaders.
