The Spirituality of the 12 Step Program is a spiritual journey calling us to progress not perfection. The underlying cause of an addiction is “the spiritual malady” which is described in the Big Book as selfishness, self-centeredness, self-will run riot. This “spiritual malady” can only be overcome, rooted out through a“Spiritual Awakening” which is the result of having worked the Twelve Steps. The Twelfth Step describes the “Spiritual Awakening” as when a woman or man has a Spiritual Awakening, the most important meaning of it is that he or she has now become able to do, feel and believe that which he or she could not do before on his/her unaided strength and resources alone” . . .”He or she has been granted a gift which amounts to a new state of Consciousness and Being”. Margie Walsh, SSJ is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia, PA. She has over 30 years of experience as a Certified Drug and Alcohol counselor and has worked at Limen House, a half-way house, Sojourners’ Place, a homeless shelter and Catholic Charities Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Program. She is currently a 12 Step Retreat facilitator for women, married couples and co-ed groups.
